It might happened to you and at that moment, you don’t understand what to do, yes, I am talking about when your iPhone is on, but the screen is black. You are really surprised that your iPhone is ringing but it’s not possible for you to answer the call. May be you have tried resetting your iPhone, letting it run out of battery and plugging it back in, but sometimes it doesn’t help and your phone screen remains black.

Such a situation is really frustrating when you rely on your iPhone for business and its screen goes black while you are miles from the nearest Apple Store. The first question that come into mind is, why is so, which problems could be a reason of this black out. A black screen can have several different causes, and the good news is that most of which you can troubleshoot. In many cases, it’s quite possible that you can solve the issue yourself, and don’t need to go to Apple store. In rare cases, all you try doesn’t simply work. Then you have to go somewhere because your iPhone will need to be repaired by a professional technician.

Sometimes the causes are simply undefined and just restarting the iPhone can fix a number of unidentified problems. So its recommended firstly to press and hold the "Sleep/Wake" button until the red slider appears. Now slide the slider to the off position to turn off the iPhone. After a while, press the "Sleep/Wake" button again to turn on the iPhone. If the screen remains black and you don't see the red slider, reset the phone. In order to reset press and hold both the "Sleep/Wake" and the "Home" buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds. When you see the Apple screen, release the buttons.

You can fix the problem when your phone screen went black only when you know the cause behind it. Following are some possible reasons why your phone screen is not bright rather black. If all below mentioned tips don’t work then you have to go to Apple store, because it is then hardware fault.

Maybe it’s dead Battery

Although, in this case your phone along black screen, will not work also. But it’s good to check first the most obvious thing. Your iPhone battery could be dead. It’s useless to mention here that what should you do now, obviously connect your iPhone to a wall socket using the power adapter that came with it. After a while, press either the "Home" or the "Sleep/Wake" button. If a drained battery is the cause of the problem, your iPhone's screen will light up and display an empty battery icon. So if you see empty battery icon , then no need to worry, you have to wait for your iPhone battery to charge.

Maybe it’s a crashed App

Yes, it can also be a reason behind your black phone screen. Like if you launched an app just before the screen went black, that particular app might have crashed. To check whether it’s really an app, follow these steps:


  • Press the "Home" button twice
  • You will see a list of recently installed apps, each with an icon and preview.
  • Swipe up on the suspect app's preview to force it closed
  • Press the "Home" button once to return to the home screen.
  • Now launch the app again to see if the problem repeats.
  • If the issue with the app persists, remove the app from your iPhone and contact the app developer for support.

Operating system's Issue

If the above mentioned both methods don’t work then it can be an operating system’s problem. Reset factory settings is the next troubleshooting step. You may know that factory reset actually erases the contents of the iPhone and installs a clean version of the iOS. In order to do so, follow these steps:


  • Firstly connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.
  • Now "iPhone" button should appear in the iTunes interface,
  • click "File," hover over "Devices,"
  • select "Back Up" to create a backup of your iPhone's data.
  • When the backup process is complete, click the "iPhone" button.
  • Select the "Summary" tab,
  • click "Restore iPhone" and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • If the "iPhone" button doesn't appear in iTunes, disconnect your iPhone from the cable, but leave the USB end connected to the computer.
  • Press and hold the "Home" and the "Sleep/Wake" buttons simultaneously for approximately five seconds to switch it off.
  • Press and hold the "Home" button and connect the USB cable to the iPhone while holding the Home button
  • You have to hold “Home” button until iTunes prompts you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.
  • Click "OK." Click "Restore" and then follow the on-screen prompts.
