inFAMOUS 2 for PS3 Gameplay

inFAMOUS 2 is the sequel to the 2009 video game inFAMOUS, with PlayStation Move motion controller support, for content creation. inFAMOUS 2 give the player mass powers of electric destruction, present a standard good-and-evil moral duality, and let them loose in a city to do as they will. It's likely one of the best superhero-sandbox game ever made, and though it has its flaws, the game remains a polished experience from start to finish.

In addition to content on disc, Infamous 2 allows users to create their own missions and distribute them to other players as User-generated content. Players will be able to use any location in the open-world game and the available allies, foes, and non-player characters to construct their missions. These missions can include combat, stealth elements, limitations on Cole's powers, and race and platforming challenges.

Most of these user-created missions will appear randomly to other players as they progress through the game's story, appearing similar to any of the on-disc missions. After completing these missions, players can rate them; this information will be used by Sucker Punch to promote popular missions to "Featured", where they will then appear in-game for all players.

inFAMOUS 2 for PS3 Game Review

inFAMOUS 2 for PS3 Game Review
inFAMOUS 2 was well received by video game critics, especially praised for its long play time, deep story and updated graphics but criticized the camera during melee combat.

Infamous 2 is a vast improvement over the original, fine-tuning and refining the game to play out faster and easier. Controls feel smoothed out, the city is a delight to explore, and the game itself just feels like a fix of the original.

The User Generated levels are expected piled up like Little Big Planet, as a lot of gamers are excitedly creating their stuff. It's a game that you finish, and immediately want to play again on the other alignment just to see what you missed.

inFAMOUS 2 Graphics and Music
inFAMOUS 2 Graphics and Music
The graphics have greatly improved in this game. People no longer run as if they have a desperate need to use the toilet, building are textured better, lighting is much better. general animations for people are better. It really looks like they put a huge amount of effort into this game. Really small details do make a huge improvement, whether it's paint peeling off the walls or water splashing as people fall in. As with inFAMOUS, music is not that great in the game.

inFAMOUS 2 Violence, Voltage, Missions and Villain

Traversing the city to get from place to place has been made easier. Cole moves quicker, climbs a bit faster, and even has a few powers specifically for getting to the rooftops. The Thrusters in particular give a bit more of a vertical push and carry you much farther. It's a small thing, but getting from place to place has become much less of an issue.

Missions have a bit more variety this time. Though some of the side content can repeat, there is enough difference between them to influence a few trips off-track to gain some additional experience. The main story missions offer the typical skirmishes with a few memorable boss encounters. Though nothing really stuck with me as a mission I wished I could replay immediately, they were engaging and entertaining enough to carry the story forward.

Enemies vary greatly from group to group, and actually require a change in strategy on the tougher difficulties. There are typical foot soldiers, melee monsters, big monsters that have a health bar, and even ice infused military troops. Each attacks differently, and requires you to do a bit of thinking before charging into the hail of bullets.

inFAMOUS 2 Morality and Powers
inFAMOUS 2 Morality and Powers
Like the previous installment, morality plays a part in story and powers. Decisions you make push you towards good or evil alignment, which in turn affect what you can do. The decisions are pretty straight forward, especially with your two new AI buddies whispering in your ear. Kuo influences the good decisions and Nix ends up backing most of the bad decisions. They even pop in to assist in combat, trapping baddies while you zap them for the desired effect. It was a welcome sight to have them along on a few missions, and keep some of the heat off of me for a moment.

Halfway through the game, your alignment will augment your current powers; ice for good and fire for evil. Each tree proves satisfying and one does not seem better than the other. It's a nice break from the typical electricity powers to gain a new element to try out. The ice/good path offers much more defensive abilities, with the fire/evil path offering some truly devastating explosive powers. Some of the powers feel like a missed opportunity, and a combination of elements would have been a nice touch.

inFAMOUS 2 Pros:
  • Great storyline
  • New Marais feels alive and vibrant
  • Improved melee combat makes close quarters battles much more enjoyable
  • Cole MacGrath's upgrade abilities give the player an exciting feelings
  • Massive explosions and the "Vortex" power reinforce visuals that are stunning
  • User Creation tools leave infinite possibilities and replay value
  • Morality decisions affect a significant portion of the game
  • Morality that shapes your powers as you progress
  • On-the-fly Power switching to adapt to any situation
inFAMOUS 2 Cons:
  • A lack of variety in enemy types and tactics
  • The game's pacing feels just a touch too slow
  • Morality is very straight forward, with rarely questionable decisions
  • User Creation is quite complex, and can take some time to figure out
  • Pedestrians get in the way more often than not
  • Camera sometimes works against you in close quarters
  • Outlying areas of the city feel dull as compare to lively heart of town
inFAMOUS 2 is rated 9.0/10 by IGN and 7.5/10 by GameSpot. iTechWhiz rate it 8.5/10 overall. Generally there is a consensus among the game reviewer that:
Small problems hold Infamous 2 back from greatness, but there is still a lot of electrifying fun to be had in Cole's latest adventure.
