Call it Rapture, Doomsday, Apocalypse, Judgment Day or simply End of The World... but something like this is going to hit the modern world on May 21st 2011, if Harold Camping and his followers are to be believed. According to the Christian broadcaster, God will destroy the Earth five months after May 21st 2011, which is October 21, 2011 to be exact.

The prediction rests, in large part, on a mathematical determination that says May 21, 2011 is the anniversary of Noah's Flood.

"Just before the flood Noah was instructed by God that in seven days the flood would begin (Genesis 7:10-16). Using the language of 2 Peter 3:8 that "a day is as a thousand years," it is like saying through Noah, who was a preacher (2 Peter 2:5): "mankind has seven days or 7,000 years to escape destruction." Since 2011 A.D. is precisely 7,000 years after Noah preached (the flood occurred in the year 4990 B.C.), God has given mankind a wonderful proof that Judgment Day will occur in the year 2011.

"God doubled the statement "a day is as a thousand years" to greatly increase our assurance that this is established by God and will shortly come to pass (Genesis 4l:32).

But another web site refutes Camping's claims, explaining in part:

In order for this "proof" to be valid, the following must be established as true:

1. That the phrase "a day is as a thousand years" (2 Peter 3:8) is to be taken literally as a mathematical formula.
2. That the timeline of the Noachian flood is rightly to be understood allegorically, as a literal event timeline for the second coming of Christ.
3. That the 7,000 literal years should begin starting at the time Noah preached.
4. That the Noachian flood occurred in the year 4990 B.C. (because "2011 A.D. is exactly 7,000 years after 4990 B.C."), and that the timespan from the flood to our calendar year 2011 is exactly 7,000 years

The Christian Research Institute says that Camping is deceiving his followers and explained on its website:

We must also learn from Camping’s error to see that our methods of interpretation are not dry subjects best left to theologians to hash out. Each of us is responsible to learn where we received the Bible and how we are to properly understand its message. Only then can we help those who have been misled by Harold Camping and all who, like him, replace the divine message of Scripture with their own thoughts and fancies.

The campaign was started by a retired civil engineer, Harold Camping, fueled and followed by many. According to them, judgment day will happen at about Saturday, May 21 6PM Pacific Time.

Bryan Ivers and Matt Ivers, of Potlatch, are spreading the Judgment Day message through billboards, signs and tracts. One billboard can be seen on Highway 95 about 10 miles north of Potlatch, just south of Coeur d'Alene. While others across the country have sold all their possessions to advance the cause, the brothers say they get more exposure by simply holding signs.

Rod Moerer, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church on 15th St in Coeur d'Alene, took the news in stride. Moerer has served in the ministry for over 40 years, he said:

I was thinking about having a garage sale that day. Others have made similar predictions in the past, but everybody’s been wrong so far.

Bob Davis, pastor of North Country Chapel in neighboring Post Falls, reminded churchgoers last Sunday of the NASA engineer who made the same prediction in 1988 and subsequent years.

Edgar C. Whisenant wrote 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988 to explain his hypothesis. 300,000 copies of the book were given free of charge to ministers across the country, and over 4 million copies were sold in bookstores and elsewhere.

So convincing were his arguments that the christian Trinity Broadcast Network aired special instructions to prepare viewers for the event.

Camping, the man behind the Family Radio Network made a similar prediction in 1994, but followers insist Camping is right this time.
